Athletics: Houghtons show class at Hylands Park

THE senior men had the rare luxury of fielding their top four runners in
Saturday’s third round of the Essex Cross Country League at Hylands
Park, Chelmsford. They were rewarded with their lowest points score of
the season, 302, and the highest team position, 6th.

Alex and Nick Houghton set the standard high finishing 28th and 35th
respectively. The talented duo rarely turn out together but when they
do their impact on the team performance is enormous. Scott Rice
continued his pursuit of an age group medal in the V40 section. He
finished 40th overall and 3rd in his age group. David Johnson ran well
to finish in 55th spot in what was a strong top half of the field of
206. John Green is gradually returning to his best as his 68th position
indicates. Don Lawless and Anthony Tobin battled for the final spot in
the scoring team. Don prevailed in 76th place, one in front of his team
mate. Mick Bumstead looks well under way to retaining his V60 title
with an improved 97th place in the race overall but again top in his
age group.

Other finishers were Jon Metcalf 91, Dave Marchant 101, Nick Trencher
102, Martin Mack 110, John Russell 111, Gary Cahill 131, Nigel Instance
144, Bernie Johnson 147, Iain Scott 155 (guest).

In the senior womens race Sam Tuck was Thurrock’s only competitor. She
returned her usual gritty performance to finish 41st in the 106 strong
field.

Thurrock Harriers’ under 13 boys team grows in strength from week to week. On Saturday they beat the powerful Cambridge team convincingly with Reece Scott 5th, Jack Exley 8th, Harry Parker 9th and Taylor Newell 15th. They are looking forward to the Essex Championships just after Christmas where they will be hotly tipped to win medals.
