Date set for Tilbury councillor’s fraud trial

A TILBURY Labour councillor has pleaded not guilty to charges of benefit fraud.

Clare Baldwin, 40, appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday, 5 December.

The mum-of-ten, of Byron Gardens, Tilbury stands accused of dishonestly claiming housing benefit and council tax benefit from Thurrock Council on 19 March 2012 and dishonestly failing to notify a change of circumstances to Thurrock Council that would affect entitlement to housing benefit and council tax benefit.

It is alleged she lived with her partner Terrance Morton (also known as Terrance Hearse) at the time. Mr Morton also pleaded not guilty to similar charges.

The two will appear at Basildon Crown Court on 24 March for a pre trial review ahead of a three day trial on 12 May. They were released on unconditional bail.

  1. Wheteher she is guilty or not, it really is no wonder that anybody has faith in elected officials, is it? I know that the system in this country works on “Innocent until proven guilty” but I think there is fuel in the old addage of no smoke withouit fire, as surely TBC would have kept this in-house if there wa nothing in it?
