Two burglaries solved out of 100 in Thurrock in October

LAST MONTH, we reported on the parlous state of burglary detection rates in Thurrock. The figures we obtained through a Freedom if Information request showed that only 6% of all burglaries in Thurrock, between April 2012 and March 2013 were solved.

So we thought we would drill down further and so we have chosen a month, October 2013, and had a look at the burglaries that took place then and how many had been, according to been solved, detected etc.

The answer is: 100 burglaries: just two solved. The two that were solved were in Church Lane, Bulphan.

We have had our critics, who feel that such stories have the danger of raising the fear of crime. Others have defended us saying that this may be exposing the consequence of the cuts to police services.

To be honest, we just feel for the hard-working coppers on the front line, who are desperate to catch the bad guys but appear to be being starved of resources.

We just think, you may want to speak to your local councillor, local MP, local senior police officer and local police crime commissioner.

So, here is the list of streets in which are burglary took place in October 2013 in Thurrock.

As a comparison, our sister paper YourHarlow reported that there were 49 burglaries in Harlow and two were solved. Harlow has a population of 80,000 compared to Thurrock’s 100,000.

  1. Investigating burglaries is a time consuming issue and needs appropriate man power, something which is no longer available or is being badly managed by the powers that be, it is far easier for a police officer to sit in his car and detect motoring crime than burglary so this is what happens.

Police need to employ more modern ways of working with crime reports being completed whilst on the job rather than back in the office as this takes the man power off the streets where it is needed.
