THERE WERE heroes at Pitsea Crematorium on Friday afternoon. There was Stan Franks. He may have died alone but he died a hero. He may have died alone in Fobbing but in Pitsea he was surrounded by hundreds of friends and well-wishers.
It was a time of warm eulogies from Thurrock MP, Jackie Doyle-Price and Bomber Command veteran, Harry Irons in a ceremony conducted with great style by Rev John Guest.
The sight of the spitfire flying overhead gave the service such a right and fitting sense of occasion and served as a wonderful testament to Stan Franks, the like of which, we may well not see the like of again.
To those who organised the whole event and raised the funds, The Thurrock branch of the Royal Air Force Association and the editor of the Thurrock Enquirer, Neil Speight, we salute you.
