THURROCK
Council trading standards officers are warning people to avoid buying dangerous children’s hats which have been found on sale in Thurrock.
Following seizures around the country by other trading standards officers, Thurrock’s team found similar hats available at Grays Market and seized them on Friday (10 January).
The hats, which are colourful and furry, are styled to look like characters from Despicable Me, Hello Kitty and Angry Birds, as well as other animal characters.
They feature two “arms” with a bobble on the end, one of which has an eyelet to secure both arms together. However, this does not detach easily and could cause serious injury or even death.
The hats have been found on sale across the UK including Kent, Norfolk and Edinburgh. They are typically sold in shops and on market stalls for between £4 and £10.
Tests carried out by trading standards departments revealed the hats pose a strangulation risk and are missing required manufacturer information and safety warnings, despite some featuring the “CE” safety mark.
Cllr Angie Gaywood, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said: “We are asking parents not to buy this product for their children and to report it to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06 if they see them being sold in Thurrock.
“The hats appeal to young children as they show well known characters, but parents must understand the dangers these hats present.
“If you have already bought one, please dispose of it safely.”
