hathaway3NEWLY qualified teachers (NQTs) are set to flock to Hathaway Academy on Tuesday as part of a major recruitment drive at the Grays school.

An intensive advertising campaign has been conducted over the last few weeks at the school that is setting about a major transformation under new principal James Howarth.

Pupils have already started noticing that there is slowly and steadily a changing of the guard at the school as a number of ‘established” teachers have left, being replaced by fresh blood.

Many believe that a younger team may be more in tune with the ethos, mindset and demands that being part of an academy requires.

  1. The young team will certainly be much cheaper than more experienced staff. New blood is vital for the success of any organisation. The secret is getting the balance right. As parents and students watch existing staff head for the exit (these include Deputy Headteacher Assistant Headteacher Advanced Skills teachers Heads of Department etc) they must be hoping that the Baby does not go with the Bathwater. All schools and Academies will be recruiting NQTs at this time. If Hathaway get it right the students might come back as well. The GCSE results will give everyone an idea of what the future holds.

  2. rocket1,

Thanks for your post! Would you say you are a glass half empty type of person or a glass half full?

  3. You can’t put a wise head on young shoulders! I agree with you Charlie F-B, “the secret is getting the balance right”.

“Effecting change and making a difference depends on what staff do and think. It’s as simple and as complex as that”! (Fullan 1991)

  4. A tad harsh I think. It obviously depends on which arse and which ear.People can achieve incredible things when they work together. We all need vision but at the same time we need to deliver the basics before we aspire to greatness. Thurrock has a number of excellent schools and playing catch up is always going to be something of a challenge.

  5. Any news on how many NQTs were appointed at Hathaway.? Did they flock in as was anticipated? Who will they be replacing?
