THE UKIP leader Nigel Farage wasn’t the only one to have a bottle of wine from the New Hall Vineyard recently as the ladies of West Tilbury WI enjoyed a visit there with lunch and wine tasting on their day out to Purleigh near Maldon. In this setting in the unspoilt Essex countryside, grapes grown here are bought by other wineries and winning wines are produced. This part of Essex is one of the dryer spots in the country ideal for producing the fruit for the wine. People invest in the crops and some come to help to pick the grapes for their own purchase. Open days are held in September and at Christmas time, a fun day out for all the family.
This month’s speaker was unable to attend the meeting owing to illness. This was at short notice so the members held a brain storming session where they discussed ideas for future events and programmes.
Secretary Denise Nice read a letter of thanks from the Basildon and Thurrock’s premature baby unit for the contribution of the WI Spring Group meeting’s gifts of tiny baby clothes.
