Tragedy as dog dies in Ockendon lake

FIRE CREWS were called to a dog reported to be trapped in the reeds around the lake at the Marley Fishing Club in Stifford Road, South Ockendon.

Fire crews deployed a boat to the lake and used a rescue path to search for the missing Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Sub Officer Andy Marshall from Grays Fire Station said: “A man had been out walking the dog when it ran into the reeds surrounding the lake. The man had gone into lake and the water was up to his waist and was searching for the dog.

“When firefighters arrived at the scene they made a thorough search and used a thermal image camera to search for the dog. The crew located the dog in the water and unfortunately the animal had died.

Sub Officer Marshall added: “If you are out walking your dog, especially in this hot weather and it goes into a lake or river, please do not be tempted to risk your own life by going into unknown waters, you can quickly get out of your depth. If you are in an emergency situation always call 999.”
