Heartache at Hathaway Academy as headteacher James Howarth battles cancer

howarthTHE HEADTEACHER of Hathaway Academy, James Howarth, is fighting cancer it has been announced.

A letter was sent out to parents on Friday night (June 13th) informing them of the situation.

A spokesperson for the sponsors of the school, formerly known as Grays School, The Academy Transformation Trust said:

“Following his recent diagnosis with lymphoma, Principal James Howarth will be taking a leave of absence from The Hathaway Academy. James is a highly respected leader with a clear, shared vision for the academy that will continue in his absence.

“We are working together with the Chair of Governors and senior staff at the academy to look at how we will continue to deliver this vision and ensure there is no disruption to our pupil’s education over the coming months.

“In the immediate future, Vice Principal Fatima Rodrigues will be assuming the role of Acting Principal until the end of the academic year in July. Going forward in September, a Senior Vice Principal Alan Osborne will be joining the school from one of our fellow Trust academies, Mark Hall Academy, to take up the position of Interim Principal.

“During James’ absence, Peter Bishop from The Trust will be bringing his extensive headship and school improvement experience to work alongside the leadership team at The Hathaway Academy. Between them they will continue to transform the learning opportunities and aspirations for all the pupils, who are at the heart of everything we do.

“We offer James and his family our full support at this time and we look forward to once again working with him to lead the academy to outstanding”.
