Let us celebrate Thurrock’s teachers

NOMINATIONS opened yesterday for the first ever Thurrock education awards.

Thurrock’s finest teachers, head teachers and those who support them are set to win recognition for their efforts, enthusiasm and talent.

Check out the list of award categories by following the link below and follow the directions to nominate a person or team you think has shown the qualities needed.

The awards are seen as a great way to celebrate the achievement of Thurrock’s schools pupils, teachers, leaders and others involved in boosting the performance of our children and young people.

Thurrock Council’s leader and education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent, announced the awards yesterday.

He said: “For too long we have not given enough attention and recognition to the tremendous individuals and teams in our schools and now is the time to put that right. I urge everyone to think carefully and nominate those who make such a positive difference to the lives of Thurrock’s young people.”

Cllr Kent continued: We’ve been talking with the schools and we’ve come up with a format I think everyone is happy with.”

The 14 categories include:

Outstanding new teacher of the year
Excellence in literacy and numeracy
Creative learning.
There are also teacher of the year awards in both primary and secondary care while the public will get to vote online for a special award for the person who has made an outstanding contribution to education in Thurrock. The shortlist for that category will be decided by the judges and announced in early September after the schools have returned.

Several awards recognise head teachers and governing bodies.

A high-powered education commission, which looked at Thurrock’s schools last year, suggested launching the awards – noting the need to celebrate achievement as a way of encouraging even better performance.

Cllr Kent said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our main sponsor for the event – the Port of Tilbury. Their support has ensured that we can hold these first awards and celebrate the success of education locally.”

Nominations close on 19th September with the winners announced on 28th November at a special evening function at High House Production Park in Purfleet.
