ON Friday 5th September, Cllr. Mike Le-Surf (Labour parliamentary candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock) is hosting a Mental Health Summit at The Edge venue in Basildon town centre with shadow minister for the armed forces Kevan Jones MP to talk about the importance of mental health and explore the concept of community mental health.
Cllr. Le-Surf said: “Many residents have experience of mental health issues. As a mental health champion in Essex I am committed to making sure that this is not a taboo subject. Labour’s plans to integrate adult health and social care will be welcome by many residents in the area and this will include supporting people with mental health issues.”
The Mental Health Summit will be an opportunity for individuals and organisations to network and discuss practical ways of improving our local community’s mental wellbeing. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from the Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces, Kevan Jones MP about mental health & wellbeing.
Basildon Cllr. Andrew Gordon who is supporting this event said: “Everyone has a mental health and one in four people have a mental health condition. Mental ill health has an estimated economic and social cost of £105 billion a year and despite accounting for 28% of the total burden only receives 13% of NHS funding.”
