THURROCK Council’s trading standards team is warning people to beware of doorstep callers this summer.
Portfolio holder for public protection, Cllr Phil Smith, said: “With all the recent storms causing minor damage to people’s homes people should be all the more vigilant about cold-callers touting for business.”
He said: “It is very important people take care when answering their door to strangers. Genuine visitors will have no objection to you checking out that they really are who they say they are.
“In addition, people should always get two or three quotes from different traders before confirming any agreement, just to make sure they are getting a fair price. Don’t just accept the first quote, shop around.”
Trading standards advice is that people should always be wary when someone they do not know knocks at their door.
Householders should think carefully about whether they really need any work doing and if they would have asked for help had the caller not knocked.
They should remember it is their doorstep and their decision whether to accept the offer of help.
Trading Standards advise that people should never agree to have work done by someone who is just passing. If there is a job that needs to be done, contact 03454 040506 and ask for a list of trading standards’ approved traders in the area.
