THURROCK Council’s Sunshine Centre in Tilbury has impressed Ofsted inspectors who have given it an “Outstanding” rating for its early years provision.
The centre, in Civic Square, Tilbury, is for children aged up to 19 with a whole range of needs both behavioural and physical.
It includes a fully-equipped sensory room and is for parents and siblings, as well as the child with a disability or special educational need
Following the inspection in August, Ofsted rated the centre “Outstanding” in all three categories – how well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children; the contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children; and the effectiveness of the leadership and management.
The report states that the in-depth knowledge of staff allows them to “provide exceptionally engaging activities and experiences which successfully cover each area of learning” and “accurately identify any gaps in learning and development” to ensure “all issues are swiftly addressed and families are immediately referred for support from other agencies if required”.
The centre’s work promoting well-being and health is also praised and that parents say “staff show a superb commitment to working with them to promote their children’s learning and development”.
Cllr John Kent, Thurrock Council’s Leader and education portfolio holder, said: “Rarely have I seen a report so full of praise and it makes me proud to know that the Sunshine Centre’s provision for its youngest children is so good.
“I went along myself on Monday to thank the staff personally. They literally embody what we have been saying we want our education system to be – the best. We want the best for all Thurrock young people, we want them to have the best possible chances irrespective of their personal circumstances.
“Each and every child in Thurrock is important and each and every child in Thurrock deserves support, not just from the local council, not just from parents, teachers and schools, but from every single person living and working here.”
