NEWS that the Highways Agency is postponing the launch of free-flow tolling at the Dartford crossing is "Yet another disappointment in this seemingly never-ending saga says the leader of Thurrock Council".

The press release says the Highways Agency want to “help” drivers “be ready for the improvements” and everything is being put back until “late November”.

Cllr John Kent said: "I think we all know that means they’re behind in the work – they’re simply not ready.

"What it does mean, however, is that we’re consigned to at least another month of congestion and as those of us that live here know only too well, that gets even worse in the run up to Christmas.

"Registration for pre-paid accounts “will open well in advance of these changes” – when?

"At least the further increase in charges will also be put back until November – I urge everyone who lives here and who uses the crossing to not only apply, but to make sure they get the local residents discount that was secured by Andrew MacKinlay and Angela Smith.

If the road changes will not now be completed until April, that’s when the congestion might be eased. But April is seven-and-a-half months away so still way over half a year of queues and jams.

"When it comes down to it, I’ve been disappointed so many times by the promises we’ve been given, this is really not a surprise. Another hope dashed".
