Making Wharf Road a safer road a priority as councillor takes action

DRIVER safety is being put first in Stanford-le-Hope after a successful campaign which highlighted a dangerous bend which needed to be looked at.

The bend in Corringham Road, which has the exit of Wharf Road coming onto it, has been a focal point for many residents and drivers with at two accidents occurring in recent history, and the fears that ‘near misses’ are happening but not being reported.

“After some inaction, I am happy to say that Thurrock Council has consented to re-paint all white lines in the area, and paint down SLOW markings in the most strategic location, to raise driver awareness of the danger of this junction”, reports Conservative Councillor Shane Hebb.

“We have also explored the mini-roundabout option. The money for a new roundabout and associated groundwork’s is not going to come our way soon. The data tells us that there are larger risks around the borough.

This means we need to do make some short-term solutions happen”.

It is hoped that a refresh of the paint markings and the addition of SLOW signage will raise driver awareness to the hazards on this bend, and will hopefully prevent drivers speeding toward the bend.

“It isn’t a perfect solution, but it is something. Ultimately all of us as drivers have to be responsible for approaching junctions safely. This is a nasty junction and we have to be extra careful here”.
