Thurrock T Birds 42 v 5 Saracens
WITH their First XV pushing for the Premiership Title, Saracens second string are never mugs and at the start of the fixture sat second in the Championship to Thurrock. This game was a hard physical battle and this nine- try thriller felt a lot tougher on the pitch than the final score would suggest.
The writing was on the wall early on with Scott laying down her marker before 5 minutes were up, she split the Saracens defence with one of her trademark mazy runs and started the scoreboard ticking over.
With Saracens tight in midfield, Ts repeatedly tried to go wide only to be cut down by a strong, fast defence, but finally after 15 minutes, Bex Francis squeezed over for 10-0.
Second best at scrum and lineout, Saracens competed ferociously at the breakdown, but not always legally. And with the half drawing to a close, The referee, after numerous warnings, sent a Saracen to the bin.
Ts immediately took advantage of their numerical supremacy and Captain Foy claimed a brace in the last 4 minutes to end the half at 22-0.
The early minutes of the second half were the same, Saracens had competed with 15 players, but were vastly outclassed with only 14. Phelps and Harris both crossed the whitewash in the first 5 minutes to put the game beyond any doubt at 32-0.
The game began to break up as injuries and changes disrupted both sides and the over eager T-Birds were beginning to give away penalties themselves. Harris began to find space out wide and claimed her second, but Saracens celebrated wildly as they pulled one back.
Harris had the last word, showing her electric pace to claim her hat trick with almost the last play of the game.
Final Score was 42-5 to leave the T-Birds nine points clear at the top of Championship One with newly promoted Henley showing their quality in second.
