IT HAS been a year of campaigning to Save Our Stroke Unit and it’s time to celebrate!! The Stroke Survivors Group’s Fundraiser is a chance to mark the success of their campaign to keep the hyper-acute stroke unit as Basildon Hospital. Polly Billington, Labour’s candidate to be Labour’s next MP joined the group as they raised over £550.

    Polly says:

“This has been an amazing campaign, as the people who know the importance of this service have been able to persuade the decision-makers including the local GPs on the Commissioning Group, that we need a Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit close to us on Thurrock. 600 people suffer a stroke every year in Thurrock, and while the advice is to act FAST if you suspect a stroke, that would be much harder if people have to travel to Southend to get treated. Now Kevin North, Christine Hamilton, Thurrock Stroke Project and the others can celebrate their success.”

Stroke Survivor and Campaigner Kevin North says:

"It is brilliant to be able to celebrate a year of hard campaigning. The support we’ve received has been overwhelming. We’ve worked with many community groups to ensure that we keep our valuable hyper-acute stroke unit in Basildon Hospital.

Myself and many other stroke survivors received excellent care during our treatment there and we’re grateful for Polly’s support on this campaign. It is essential that we keep campaigning on this issue so to make sure we protect the services we all value. We want to make sure the pathway for other stroke survivors is as good and better than the service we received."
