THE man behind the creation of the Thurrock Fairness Commission is calling for volunteers to help take it forward.

Cllr Richard Speight guided the proposal through Thurrock Council’s overview and scrutiny system and to cabinet where it was approved.

Now the council is on the lookout for nominations from interested bodies and residents to support the independent commission examine issues surrounding inequality helping make Thurrock a fairer place.

Cllr Speight said: “The commission’s role will be to speak with and listen to local people and make sure those opinions are heard by decision-makers.

“Over the last few months I have spoken with many people who expressed support for the commission and now’s the chance to do something specific to combat the inequalities and general unfairness in our society.

“There’s not much time left to register your interest – nominations close at noon on Sunday, 14 December.”

The commission will create a set of recommendations to help shape future strategies for public service provision based on evidence and best practice as well as celebrating and promoting positive work that already takes place and encouraging more working relationships between the public, voluntary and business sectors.

Thurrock Council is supporting the nomination process, but the commission will have an independent chair with a background in the voluntary and community sector.

Nominations are also being encouraged from people with an interest and expertise in housing, health, economics, the youth cabinet and disability groups among others. Applications are particularly encouraged from diverse groups across Thurrock who are often underrepresented.

The commission is expected to meet around eight times over the coming year, as well as hosting events to find out views of local people.

Commissioner roles are voluntary posts with out of pocket expenses such as travel reimbursed.

Nomination packs can be requested by emailing diversity@thurrock/gov.uk, through the council’s website thurrock.gov.uk/fairness, or by calling 01375 652486.
