Imagine if your unwanted bulges and bumps would simply melt away. It might sound far-fetched but freezing fat to rid it from the body is a technique now being used.
Stubborn fat has its name for a reason, and no matter how many hours you spend pounding the treadmill this New Year, those wobbly thighs, bingo wings and bulging love handles often remain.
Unsightly bumps and dimples can be a lasting reminder of an overload of food and drink, and while they are quick to appear the challenge of getting rid of them can seem impossible.
Instead of sweating away the inches in the gym, controlled cooling is a method now being used to eliminate fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.
Developed by Harvard scientists, CoolSculpting targets fat cells in isolated areas of the body, destroying them for good.
While such an unusual technique might receive a frosty reception at first, attitudes towards the technique have thawed and the procedure has gained ground in America, where it was developed and approved, and more recently in the UK.
Without the need for a needle or scalpel, this non-surgical fat reduction treatment offers an alternative to liposuction. However, only the treated area will be affected, so don’t expect to see results all over.
CoolSculpting works by Cryolipolysis, a science which involves fat cells being cooled to near freezing, crystalised and broken down to die. Research has shown that these dead fat cells are digested by white blood cells in the immune system.
As fat freezes at a higher temperature than other tissue, it is possible to freeze body fat without damaging skin or surrounding tissue, according to those behind the technique.
A single one-hour treatment is said to reduce fat in the area targeted by an average of 20 to 25 per cent. This typically equates to around 4 millimetres.
To achieve greater results or to target additional areas, the procedure can be used over and over again, however this will hit your bank balance as well as your fat cells. The actual cost varies depending on the areas of concern, the number of sessions needed and the ultimate goal, but a single session might set you back around £800.
After a short rest following treatment, you can usually return to your daily routine while the freezing effect continues to work.
Results should be seen within weeks, however the body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to four to six months post treatment.
