New Year Sales

IT’S that time of year when bargain-hunters swap their Christmas jumpers for shoulder pads and prepare to do battle in the New Year sales.

Despite the over indulgence of turkey and trimmings, thousands hit the streets post Christmas in the hope of bagging a bargain.

We’ve come up with a handy list of top tips to help you beat the crowds and seal the deal of the day:

Furniture: When shopping for furniture, write down the measurements of the spaces you want to fill, or furniture you want to replace, before you leave home.

Take a photograph of where the new piece will go and you can use it to imagine what items will look like while browsing the store. Take with you material or cushions from the room to get an ideal colour match. Test for comfort.

Inside knowledge: Get the inside scoop on bargains by signing up to mailing lists for sale warnings and exclusive offers. Some stores offer exclusive pre-sale previews to loyalty cardholders.

Have a plan: When shopping for clothes have a list of what you are looking for and stick to it. This will hopefully avoid those impulse purchases that end up at the back of the closet unused.

Before you head out check your wardrobe and make a list. Earmark shops you need to aim for then make a bee-line for them on sales day.

Will you really wear it? Yes, it may look like a bargain, but in reality, will you ever wear it? If so, ask yourself where and when? Keep a cool head while all those around you fall victim to sales-induced mass hysteria.

Shop around: So, you’ve found yourself what appears to be a great deal? Check it’s not cheaper elsewhere by downloading one of the price comparison apps, or do a general Google search of the product to see if it’s cheaper online.

Double the price: Before committing to a purchase, double the price and ask yourself would you still buy it? Buying something just because it is in the sale means it’ll probably end up stuffed in the back of the closet.

Don’t rush: Take a deep breath and double check the list above before you purchase

Stay within your budget: It might be a bargain but remember interest builds on credit cards – and fast.
