From a UK General Election to a total solar eclipse, a whole host of events will be taking place in 2015.
On the sporting calendar there’s plenty to entertain with the rugby and cricket World Cups, while a number of anniversaries and historic events will also be commemorated.
Whatever you have planned for the year, we’ve picked out just a few of the big events ahead to give you a head start on what’s happening in 2015.
January
January 1: The Eurasian Economic Union will come into effect creating a single economic market of 171 million people. It follows political and economic union established by a treaty signed in May 2014 between the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.

February 11: 25th anniversary of Nelson Mandela being freed
February 14 to March 16: 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand

March 20: Total solar eclipse will occur and be visible in the North Atlantic

May 5 to October 31: Expo 2015 to be held in Milan, Italy
May 7: Date set for UK General Election

June 6: 70th anniversary of D-Day Normandy
June 8 to June 19: ISAF Sailing World Cup at Weymouth
June 29 to July 12: Wimbledon. This year the annual grass tennis tournament has been put back a week in 2015 to allow players a rest after the French Open

July 7: 10th anniversary of terrorist bombs in London
August
August 6 & August 9: 70th anniversaries of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima (6th 1945) and Nagasaki (9th 1945)
September
September 10: If still reigning, Queen Elizabeth II will surpass her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch
September 18 to October 31: The Rugby World Cup 2015 will be hosted in 12 venues across England
