NEW YEAR, NEW CAREER?
The start of the New Year is a time when many people reflect back on the last 12 months and consider starting afresh in January.
Among the many resolutions made at midnight on December 31, a new job or change of career is high on the list of what people want to achieve.
Whether you’re already out of work, bored of your current post or just looking for a change in direction, simple steps can be taken to start the ball rolling.
We’ve come up with some helpful tips to consider if you’re looking to make a change:
• Update your CV. It is one of the best ways to make an impression and stand out from the crowd. Don’t let typos and spelling mistakes let you down
• Make sure your digital footprint is good. Update your LinkedIn profile and make as many connections as possible. Employers are increasingly doing online background checks when thinking of hiring someone
• Consider whether your skills need updating. Find out what courses are starting at your local college or adult education centre that will apply to your new direction in life. There are a range of government funding options available as well, for example childcare
• Sign up with a recruitment agency to find temporary work while you’re looking for a more permanent post – it’s all worthwhile experience
• Sign up to job search and networking sites online
• Consider questions that may be asked of you in an interview and practice your responses, such as your strengths and weaknesses.
• Consider your finances. Before you rush to hand in your notice, weigh up whether you and your family can cope financially. It may be some time before you get a job again which can put strain on the sole provider
• Volunteer to do work experience in the field you want to move into. Not only does it get your foot in the door to demonstrate your skills, but the experience you gained can be added to your CV
