THE first Thoroughly Thurrock twilight networking event in 2015 took place last Monday (February 2nd) at Orsett Hall.
With over 70 business people attending to listen to Alistair Gale, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of London Authority as well to network with Essex Chambers of Commerce and local Essex businesses.
Simplifying the role of the Port of London Authority (PLA), Alistair began with a very light hearted description of them as the highways agency of the tidal Thames, spanning the length of the river Thames from Teddington to the estuary and includes terminals on the North and South side of the river. From this light hearted description he then went on to explain the full scope of their role in terms of commercial traffic as well as public events, the largest event in recent years being the 2012 Royal River Pageant.
As the second largest Port Authority in England by volume it contributes £3billion to the economy and employs more than 46,000 people. The talk was both informative and entertaining with the audience questions showing the local interest on the possibility of using the Thames to commute to central London from Thurrock and asking whether the ferry from Gravesend would ever return to Grays.
Alistair commented about the evening saying, “Over 80% of the goods handled on the Thames are moved through terminals in Thurrock. This underpins a huge amount of economic activity: at least 10,000 jobs and economic value added of over £1 billion.Â
And this is set to grow as investments at the Port of Tilbury and London Gateway continue. It was great to share this with Chamber members, together with the icing on the cake news: our own investment in a new catamaran being built in Essex for our riverbed survey team.”
The next Thoroughly Thurrock will be at Orsett Hall on April 13th where the guest speakers Barclays will be presenting on the pension regulations for auto enrolment for small and medium sized businesses.
