Hockey: Vital away win for Thurrock Men

Division 3 South East

Essex University 1 v 4 Thurrock

THIS was a must win game for Thurrock against the bottom of the league team but they started nervously and went one goal down after five minutes from a well worked University goal, the visitors then struggled to keep the ball and had some good opportunities but could not work the University goalkeeper.

This changed when Jeff West found a bit of space at the top of the D to get a fierce snap shot away which gave the keeper no chance, the rest of the first half was a very scrappy affair but just before half time Julian Thake put Thurrock in the lead for the first time with a unstoppable strike past the stranded keeper.

Thurrock took control of the second half and where in total control with the defence rarely troubled and the keeper hardly having to make a save, Ashley Snell found himself unmarked at the back post and kept his composure to flick the ball over the stranded keeper to put the game out of reach of the home side.

Nick Stapelton wrapped up the scoring just before the final whistle to give the visitors a happy journey home!

Next week Thurrock host promotion chasing Redbridge and Ilford at Palmers College
