A PRESSURE group has been set up to try and save a number of the services on Langdon Hills.
Save our Langdon Hills has told YT that they are appalled at the cuts planned for Langdon Hills which sits on the border of Corringham and Basildon.
The group believe that the beauty spot could end up unmanaged and be a target for fly-tipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour.
They are also concerned that the hugely popular, Santa in the Woods events, which attract well over a thousand visitors a year, has been cancelled.
A spokesperson said: "Thurrock Council have decided to leave Langdon Hills Country Park unmanaged, cancelling events and planning to reduce maintenance at the site on the edge of Corringham.
"As part of a cost Âcutting exercise, the Council are removing a number of Ranger positions at the Country Park. The result will be health risks, antiÂsocial behaviour and loss of habitats and wildlife."
Thurrock Council has responded. A spokesperson said; "Thurrock Council’s ranger service, just as every council department, has had to take its share of funding reductions.
"An examination of the service showed that what is now planned for 2015/16 will have comparatively little effect on services.
"As far as Santa in the Woods is concerned, it has always been a voluntary function – although admittedly volunteers from the department played a major role.
"If volunteers wish to run a similar scheme this year, the council will be more than happy to facilitate it".
