East Thurrock 0 v 2 Grays Athletic
GRAYS Athletic looked every inch the promotion candidates as they dismantled local rivals East Thurrock United, 2-0 at Rookery Hill.
Grays Athletic got into their stride very quickly and showed why they are such a promotion threat.
They opened the scoring in the 5th minute when a high ball flustered the Rocks keeper and as the ball pinged in the area, Jordan Wilson bundled the ball over the line.
This was always going to be a tough ask for East Thurrock as Sam Higgins was missing. However, Mitchell Gilbey was an able replacement and he drew a fine save from Lamar Johnson after breaking free from the Grays defence.
But Rocks came rolling back. By the twenty minute mark, they had been awarded six corners but without any clear cut chances.
Grays were finding it hard to get out of their half. A snap shot by Fortnam-Tomlinson was the first chance in over twenty minutes.
Grays should have made it 2-0 when Fortnam-Tomlinson broke free but as he pulled the trigger, Paul Goodacre made a great covering tackle.
The rest of the half was full of cup-de-sacs and thwarted half chances. Grays were the classier side whilst East Thurrock plugged away.
The second half got off to what can only be described as a low key start until the 54th minute when the ever dangerous Dumebi Dumaka skipped past the Rocks defence and chipped it over David Hughes and in.
You had the feeling that this was always a "Punching above their weight" season for The Rocks and the Easter weekend confirmed that.
Rocks rang the changes but it was still obvious that they were missing Sam Higgins.
Grays still plundered forward whilst keeping their shape and in general looking composed and every bit the promotion candidates they now are.
Grays have a huge test on Saturday as they travel to leaders Maidstone United.
