Ward by Ward: Tilbury Riverside: Baldwin to win by a street?

FIVE years ago, all the parties worked very hard in Tilbury. Even a year ago, UKIP were very busy as the european elections approached.

And it nearly worked as they only lost to Labour by just 24 votes.

This year it all seems a bit quiet in Tilbury and we haven’t heard of much UKIP activity in the ward.

Five years ago, after David Cameron’s big rally at Palmer’s, Jackie Doyle-Price was walking the hard yards in Tilbury and had Tory big hitters such as Chris Grayling with her.

In 2015, it all seems to be a quick spin in an Ensign Bus around Dock Road.

And, for the first time in a long long time there is no BNP or NF candidate in the ward.

NF only polled 54 votes in 2014 and less than 200 in both 2011 and 2012.

Which brings us to the defending candidate, Claire Baldwin. It has been a bit of a roller coaster for Claire since she was elected in 2011. To many she was a mother-of-ten who was out of her depth. And in many situations, she was.

However, what became apparent over the four years was that she loved getting stuck into the case work that affects the people of Tilbury and the people of Tilbury flocked to Claire to see if she could help. Indeed, Claire could not make her interview with YT as she was involved with a homeless couple.

Claire had the trauma of the Housing Benefits court case which she probably hasn’t totally recovered from. She was found Not Guilty by the way.

In many ways, Claire Baldwin is the perfect fit for a large majority of her ward. The mother-of-ten (see we said it again) who has an army hero son, who many believe was the victim of a conspiracy.

That doesn’t mean UKIP cannot win. The Tim Aker bandwagon might be quite a force or it might just not be the force people think it is.

UKIP gained 35% of the vote in 2014 and we predict that they will get less than that.

We predict a Baldwin win…..

BENTON Scott, Conservative

COMPTON Charlotte, UKIP
