TWO Labour parliamentary candidates have claimed that they were subject to a tirade of foul-mouthed abuse from a UKIP activist.
South Basildon and East Thurrock (SBET) candidate, Mike Le-Surf, his partner, Julie Morrisey and Basildon and Billericay candidate, Gavin Callaghan were manning a Labour stall in Basildon town centre on Saturday morning (April 25th), when the alleged incident took place.
Mr Callaghan said: ‘We had just set up the stall when we became engaged in conversation with a man.
"After we put our opinion across, he launched into a tirade of abuse using terms such as "silly cow" and "stop talking f****ng s***."
The gentlemen in question, according to Labour, was later seen campaigning with UKIP activists.
Mike Le-Surf who was away from the stall at the time said: "UKIP’s representative’s in the constituency seem to have a problem with common decency and democracy.
"Thank goodness local residents understand the nasty and aggressive base that this vile party are working from."
Julie Morrissey said: "The remarks were completely uncalled for and totally unprovoked. It is not the first time we have had problems with these right-wing extremists who clearly have a hate filled agenda."
Labour sent a photograph of the said male, alleged to have made the remarks.
YT understands that the male in question was allegedly Peter Prendegast.
Homesteads resident, Peter Prendegast, stood as a UKIP candidate in that ward in 2011,12 and 14. He is not standing this year.
A spokesperson for UKIP said "We had an extremely positive day in Basildon Town Centre yesterday listening to many resident’s concerns and providing them with an opportunity to come along and meet the candidates.
During the five hours spent there we had no knowledge of any such incident. It is surprising that neither of the Labour Candidates made a complaint at the time to the UKIP candidates, or to officers from Essex Police who were on regular patrols throughout yesterday morning and early afternoon."
