Grays High Street: Thurrock’s utter disgrace

ONE OF our readers was walking down Grays High Street on Bank Holiday Monday morning and was disgusted by the sight she witnessed.

The street looked like the aftermath of a flood or natural disaster, where all the flotsam and jetsam had spread itself over the pavement.

They sent over the photograph to YT.

At the same time, our sister paper, Your Harlow was on an assignment on a similar precinct in Harlow, so we asked our snapper to take a photograph. It was absolutely pristine.

People’s first reaction is to level an accusation at the council and they may well have questions to answer but there must be some form of collective responsibility here.

Which got us to thinking. Whatever happened to the Grays Town Centre Regeneration Team? Or was it one big talking shop?

Either way, good luck attracting businesses to the new units at the former Grays Magistrates Court.

To be fair, Kentucky Fried Chicken do have three bins outside their shop.

A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said: "The responsibility for this kind of mess lies with those who cause it, not the council.

"Thurrock Council is increasingly working with local communities to combat litter and fly-tipping issues and urges everyone to recognise their obligation to the community as a whole and to dispose of litter properly

"The council used to provide clean-ups of Grays High Street every weekday morning and every weekday afternoon/evening, as well as on weekends and bank holidays.

"Due to the high cost of overtime working, this has been reduced to one clean every weekday morning.
