Athletics: Multi event success at Thurrock Harriers

THURROCK Harriers hosted the first county track and field championships of the year with the multi events championships for the young age groups.

The first round of the EVAC Track and Field League took place last Wednesday at Blackshots.

The host club have teamed up with Pitsea Road Runners this season and for the men

particularly the merger was a success. In the six team match they finished 2nd a

few points behind the winners Southend AC.

The visitors included Steve Kemp who won the 1500m walk overall convincingly and he was supported in the 40+ section by Eamonn Shelley who also won.

In the 3000m evergreen Mick Bumstead won the V60 section, though other good performances came from Eamonn Shelley with a time of 11:00 and Don Lawless with 10:45.

Jon Metcalf was winning good points all evening which included a good win in the V50 800m.

Lynn Talbert, who has been injured throughout the winter, won the V50 800m and took

second in the 200m.

These leagues are low key, but very enjoyable competition and Bernie Johnson, with his team, in his first experience as meeting co-ordinator can be pleased with this very successful event.
