Thurrock Council raises hundreds to help victims of Nepalese earthquake

ONE of Thurrock’s security staff was shocked on Tuesday (12 May) when he heard about the latest earthquake in Nepal.

Suman Shrestha had been comforted by the news that his relatives at home had survived last month’s quake and the series of after-shocks that followed – although their homes and village had been destroyed.

Tuesday’s news brought the fear back again, and although contact with the family has been difficult, it seems there has been no personally tragic news.

However, Suman wanted to do something and he and colleagues went around the Civic Offices in New Road, Grays, with a bucket asking for contributions for him to send home.

Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Steve Liddiard, said: “I have deep sympathy for the people of Nepal and the Ghurkha community here in Britain and in Thurrock.

“I’m told the response from the council staff on Tuesday was tremendous – we collected £702 in just a couple of hours – and the collection will be available at reception for the next few days and I would ask that everyone visiting the Civic Offices spares what they can afford.”
