Night of arson attacks after four incidents in Grays

Firefighters were called to tackle a spate of deliberate fires in Grays.

The first was behind shops in Hathaway Road where rubbish had been set alight. A crew from Grays attended the incident and the fire was extinguished by 01:54 hrs. (incident 3175).

At 02:08 hrs, multiple fires were reported in a rear garden in Hathaway Gardens. A crew from Grays used one hose reel to tackle the incident, which was dealt with by 02:41 hrs. (incident 3177)

Then at 02:21 hrs, firefighters were called to Vicarage Square to a blaze involving a brick built building, measuring 25 x 8 metres and housing five vehicles. Crews reported it was an open fronted garage and 80 per cent of the roof was alight.(incident 3178)

Initially a crew from Grays was sent to tackle the incident but on arrival, the incident commander requested the attendance of additional crews and two appliances from Orsett were sent to the scene.

At 02:53 hrs, firefighters reported the roof had collapsed. Two jets and one hose reel were in use to douse flames. This incident was dealt with by 03:52 hrs. A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause. Police and Ambulance teams were in attendance. There were no reported casualties.

At 02:39 hrs, a crew from Corringham prevented a fire in a bin shed from spreading to flats in Coway Gardens Grays. (incident 3179). Firefighters used two hose reels to tackle the blaze, which was out by 03:08 hrs.
