Eleven years in jail for man who terrorised Stanford-le-Hope woman with baseball bat in her own home.

    A 26-year-old man who forced his way into a woman’s home and threatened her with a baseball bat and hammer has been jailed for 11 and a half years.

    Syd Slingo, of Camel Road, Newham, pleaded not guilty to aggravated burglary but was convicted after being found guilty by a jury at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

    Slingo was one of three men who forced their way into a house in Branksome Avenue , Corringham at 6.50pm on January 16, 2015, and threatened a woman in her 20s before making off with a safe containing jewellery of sentimental value and cash.

    Slingo was arrested after being issued as wanted in February 2015. He was charged with aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and theft in a dwelling the following month.

    Slingo was jailed for 11 years for aggravated burglary and six months for theft of a motor vehicle to run consecutively .

    Investigating officer Dc Clive Day from Grays CID said: "Slingo’s actions that day left the victim deeply traumatised. It is testament to her inner strength that she was able to present the evidence that enabled the jury to reach the verdict they did and ensure Slingo felt the full weight of the justice system.”
