THE MECCA Bingo in Grays is set to close.
Shocked staff received notices of redundancy today (Thursday).
The news comes as a shock to both staff who have lost they jobs as well as many residents who enjoyed their traditional game of bingo.
YT understands that over 20 jobs will be lost. A number of staff have been there for over twenty years.
It looked as if the Mecca Bingo in Grays, had seen out the recession, the smoking ban and the popularity of on-line gambling.
However, it was not to be.
A spokesperson for Mecca Bingo said: "We never take the decision to close a club lightly. However, the Grays club has been under-performing for some time and we are considering taking the difficult decision of terminating our lease.
"This would enable us to increase our investment in the rest of our estate. We haven’t got a firm date yet, as we are still finalising contracts with the landlord, but it is likely to be during the summer.
