Thurrock Labour councillor Terry Brookes resigns

WEST Thurrock and South Stifford Labour councillor, Terry Brookes has resigned.

YT understands it is for "personal reasons".

Councillor Brookes was elected in a by-election in October 2014, following the death of councillor Andy Smith.

He won with a majority of 282 (58%) votes over UKIP.

But after a series of no-shows, he was very publicly sacked as portfolio holder for crime by the leader of Thurrock Council, John Kent.

On Tuesday, it was announced that he had been suspended from the Labour Party.

A statement from Thurrock Council is as follows:

A by-election has been called for the West Thurrock and South Stifford ward of Thurrock Council following the resignation of member Terry Brookes.

The notice of election was published today (Wednesday, 5 August) and the by-election will be held on Thursday, 10 September.

On the day, polling stations will be open from 7am in the morning until 10pm in the evening.

Nominations for candidate have to be made by 4pm on Thursday, 13 August – and the publication of the names of candidates is expected to be by 4pm on the following day.

The last date to register to vote and take part in the poll – if somebody is not currently on the Register of Electors is midnight on Monday, 24 August – registration can be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by telephone on 01375 652816. You need your national insurance number and date of birth to apply to register.

Applications for a postal vote should be received by the council’s elections team by 5pm on Tuesday, 25 August, and proxy vote applications must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, 2 September.
