Explosion and fire at fuel tankers in Purfleet

    FIRE CREWS tackled a fire involving five fuel tankers in Wood Avenue, Purfleet. On arrival, crews report that the tankers are well alight. Crews are using a hose reel to tackle the fire while also working to protect surrounding risks.

    Update – 01:00hrs – The fire is now surrounded, crews are using one hose reel and foam to tackle the fire.

    Update – 01:20hrs – Incident Commander, ADO Edey reports that the fire is surrounded and steady progress is being made. Crews are continuing to use a hose reel and foam to tackle the fire.

    Update – 02:10hrs – The fire is now out. Crews used one hose reel, two main jets, one ground monitor and foam to extinguish the fire. Two fire appliances will remain on scene to dampen down.

    Incident Commander ADO Martin Edey said:

    "The fire involved five fuel tankers which were empty, but are used to transport fuel. Crews worked hard to protect surrounding risk, including ten other tankers and a workshop which were in close proximity to the fire.

    Crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel, two main jets and foam. "

    A joint investigation by the police and the fire service will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
