ON Friday (14 August) a Stanford-le-Hope man was fined by Basildon magistrates for dumping rubbish at Greenacres between Corringham and Five Bells.

Scott Williamson, 23, of Abbotts Drive, admitted the fly tipping offence which happened on New Year’s Eve.

Magistrates were told a Thurrock Council investigation combined with CCTV footage from the scene linked Williamson to the event.

He pleaded guilty to one offence under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act for knowingly causing controlled waste to be deposited. The court was shown some photographs of the fly-tipped material which included household waste, wood and a pizza box with the name Williamson on it

Magistrates ordered Williamson to pay a £400 fine a £40 victim surcharge and £621 in costs – a total of £1,061.

Cllr Jane Pothecary, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for public protection, said afterwards: “We were criticised for only bringing householders and a chemist shop to court over the Cory’s Wharf fly-tipping incident last year.

“This success shows that Thurrock Council will prosecute the fly-tippers themselves when the evidence is available.

“A great deal of work is done by a small team in public protection, but this conviction shows that we are doing everything possible to stop the menace of fly-tipping where we can.”
