DESPITE Monday’s heavy rain, around a hundred people were at Coalhouse Fort to take part in the First World War commemorative sports day event.

Unfortunately, the sporting element of the day had to be cancelled due to the downpour which made the outside spaces unfit for use, but Thurrock Council’s regeneration and communities teams were on hand to deliver a fantastic experience to visitors.

There was a re-enactment by the Great War Society, songs from the Great War period by Golden Voices and interactive tours of the historic East Tilbury Fort.

The free event was hosted by the fort this year to mark the opening of the Engine Room Café, information centre and toilet block following a £1 million investment from the Heritage Lottery fund.

Cllr Sue Gray, Mayor of Thurrock also braved the rain and said: “Yes, it was soggy and yes it was pretty muddy – but we’re here today to remember those brave soldiers who endured plenty more than just some rain.

“I thought it was really wonderful, the singing filled the rooms and halls of the fort.

“You can see why the investment was made here, it’s a truly lovely historical place and I know I’ll be back to visit again soon – I encourage everyone to come down and have a look around, have a picnic and admire the beautiful views.”
