SOUTH Essex College will be awarding Essex broadcaster, Peter Allen, an honorary degree during their graduation ceremony in October.
Peter Allen, an award-winning radio broadcaster from Rochford, currently co-presents 5 Live Daily on BBC Radio 5 live and has been with the channel since it started in 1994.
Peter was a founding presenter of the breakfast show on 5 Live and won four Sony Gold Awards with the programme.
With 40 years’ experience in journalism, Peter has unrivalled knowledge of news and current affairs. He has worked in senior roles for some of the UK’s leading news broadcasters including ITN and London News Network.
When asked about his career, Peter said: “It’s been a wonderful job, fun from the moment I joined the Basildon Standard 50 years ago through to the years in commercial radio and on television and then at the BBC.
“I love the infinite variety and complexity of the people and places I have encountered. I could not think of a better way to spend a working life.”
Essex boy Peter, was brought up in Wickford and Billericay and educated in Brentwood. His first years as a journalist were spent in Basildon.
He added: “My biggest achievement is survival I guess, and the ability to take advantage of chances when they occur.
“What would I have been if not a broadcaster… miserable! Radio remains the best means of communication.”
He doesn’t have an idol as such but his favourite broadcaster is Jane Garvey, who he presented 5 Live with for many years.
When asked what advice he would give this year’s South Essex College graduates, he said: “Be flexible, go where the market offers chances and always, where you can, go for a job you will enjoy rather than one which offers the most security.”
The College’s graduation ceremony for their higher education students will take place on Tuesday 20 October at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff. Degree students will be honoured and presented with their awards. For more information, visit www.southessex.ac.uk/graduation.
