PREVIEW: East Thurrock United looking to use FA cup clash to inspire league run.

By Matthew Biggadike

EAST Thurrock United boss John Coventry has identified the importance of a good cup run in terms of building momentum in the league.

Ahead of his sides’ FA Cup second round qualifying clash away at Carshalton Athletic tomorrow afternoon, Coventry said, “In the past a good cup run has coincided with good league form”.

“I was very pleased with the attitude and commitment showed by my players last week in the defeat to Staines. We had 10 men for an hour and still dominated the game. We were unlucky to concede a goal late on, but if we carry on doing what we are doing, the results will come” he added.

East Thurrock travel to the Isthmian Division One South side without experienced defender Rickie Hayles following his third consecutive red card in as many games last week. However when asked if he felt Hayles discipline was becoming an issue in recent weeks, Coventry said “No not at all. Not all of the red cards have been his fault, especially the one last weekend which I felt was particularly harsh”.

East Thurrock fans will be dreaming of another FA cup run similar to last year, which saw them make the first round proper before losing out to Sky Bet league two side Hartlepool United.

East Thurrock are without Kye Ruel and Sammy Knott through injury, whilst Kris Newby remains on the sidelines following his dislocated elbow. Rickie Hayles misses out with suspension and fellow defender Simon Peddie through work commitments.

Carshalton Athletic

Carshalton Athletic are currently sitting 16th in the Isthmian division one south. They triumphed with a 2-1 away win at Pagham FC in the previous round.
