Thurrock Council accounts in good health says leader

THE LEADER OF Thurrock Council has expressed his delight at the state of the Thurrock Council accounts.

Councillor John Kent said: "At the Standards and Audit Committee members were presented with what’s called the financial and annual governance statement.

Our independent external auditors, who used to be so critical of the council’s financial abilities, have once more signed off the accounts “unqualified” and on time as well as confirming we are providing value for money.

In fact it is more than that, the external auditor has confirmed we have made some very difficult spending decisions and made them well; so well that they are confident, looking three years ahead when the situation will continue to get more difficult, that Thurrock Council will continue to manage its finances in a responsible manner.

This contrasts with the performance of the last Conservative administration in Thurrock who overspent the council budget by £4 million in a single year, increased council tax by over 30% and reduced reserves from over £8 million to just £2 million.

The Financial Statement sets out the council’s financial performance for the 2014/15 year and its financial position at 31 March 2015.
