Thurrock 20 v 17 Amersham
THURROCK maintained their 100% league record with a hard fought victory over a well drilled Amersham side. The visitors got off to the perfect start, and looked the most likely to open the scoring, and from a high kick deep into Thurrock’s 22 they did in the simplest of tries, the kick caused confusion in the Thurrock defence as 2 players went for the same ball, the ball bounced loose and winger George Wood picked up the loose ball and ran in unopposed to score under the posts, Fluker added the simple conversion.
Thurrock came back and slowly started to dominate the scrums and a try wide out from Freddie Russo reduced the deficit. The game continued to be cat and mouse with neither side able to add to the scoreboard until 6 minutes before half time as A&C attacked the Thurrock line, the referee gave a penalty for offside, which he then decided it stopped them from scoring so awarded a penalty try, Fluker took the easy conversion so now led 14-5 at the break.
The half time talk proved to be vital as Thurrock came out the better side the back row Tom Pool, James Flavin and Bradleigh Retigan started to dominate along with some big runs from Jarrett Crouch and Andy Nimmo, and despite and early penalty from the visitors, Thurrock were on the front foot and deservedly scored Three tries, unfortunately none of which were converted, which would have given Thurrock the breathing space they wanted, but it was enough in the end to secure victory with a bonus point, tries from Jake Barrand (2) and Tom Pool which sealed victory, in a tense and enjoyable game.
This week Thurrock travel to Ruislip, kick off is 2pm
