Jobseekers given a boost with Wates Building Futures course

JOBSEEKERS in Thurrock have been given a career kick-start by affordable housing contractor, Wates Living Space, having secured a place on its national Building Futures training scheme.

Nine over-19s from Thurrock, who have been struggling to get into work, participated in the two week Building Futures programme which gives jobseekers an opportunity to take part in construction skills training to improve their employment prospects.

This forms part of Wates’ commitment to ensuring that its development work in Thurrock brings with it a boost to local employment and training. The contractor is currently delivering the Transforming Homes programme for Thurrock Council which includes refurbishment of council homes.

Candidates participating in Building Futures were given the opportunity to learn a variety of practical skills such as carpentry, painting and plumbing. Employability skills sessions were also provided, enabling them to practice their interview technique and further training enabling them to find employment.

All candidates have been rewarded for their efforts with a QCF BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Construction and will also undertake a CSCS test to help secure access to future training and work experience on building sites.

Andy Hobart, Managing Director of Wates Living Space, commented: ‘’We are constantly looking for ways to invest in the communities in which we work. Our Building Futures programme enables us to do just that – helping local residents to gain employment and training opportunities. I hope that this programme has equipped these young people with the skills, experience and confidence to succeed on their future career paths.’’

Cllr Lynn Worrall, Thurrock Council’s Housing Portfolio Holder said: “The Building Futures programme gives local people looking for jobs a chance to gain construction-industry skills and qualifications and increases their chances of finding a job. That has to be a good thing.”
