A WHIP crackingly good time was had by all at the first A Beautiful Mind Cinema Club dementia-friendly screening at the Thameside Theatre last week.
Both the Mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Sue Gray, and the deputy mayor, Cllr Cathy Kent, were at the Grays theatre on Thursday (22 October) afternoon, for the showing of Calamity Jane.
The event was arranged by the council’s Adults Health and Commissioning team, and was run by staff from the council, theatre, and volunteers from ngage and The Alzheimer’s Society.
The mayor said afterwards: “I want to thank the organisers for arranging such a wonderful event.
“It made it possible for people who live with dementia to come and have a good time with their friends and family without having to feel worried.
“The fact that help and advice was also on hand was an added bonus.”
She said: “I’m really looking forward to attending future screenings and continuing to meet with those who come along. Everyone had smiles on their faces and you could hear them singing along it was lovely.”
And Cllr Kent added: “We as councillors are always talking of providing services in new and exciting ways and this is a perfect example. We need to be adventurous in the way we provide services, and that works best when the whole community is involved.”
Thurrock Council’s Local Area Co-ordinators were also at the theatre to provide help and information and entertainment was provided by Grays resident and “Calamity Jane” Rachel Gormer.
The council’s heritage and museum’s officer, Jonathan Catton also provided a selection of memorabilia and reminiscence of times past, and people enjoyed refreshments during the interval.
Future events for the cinema club are planned for early in the New Year, once the pantomime season is over.
Stuart Turner, a senior practitioner social worker in the council’s Adult Social Care team led the event and said he hoped that the next screening will be of the Barbara Streisand and Omar Sharif musical Funny Girl.
