Clock ticking on East Thurrock United’s new stadium bid

THE CLOCK appears to be ticking on East Thurrock United developing a new ground in Stanford-le-Hope.

The plan for a new ground at the Billet in Stanford was on the agenda at a meeting of Thurrock Council’s cabinet on Wednesday night (Nov 11th).

Portfolio holder, Gerard Rice told the cabinet that the council that they were still awaiting a planning application from the football club based at Rookery Hill.

Cllr Gerard Rice, portfolio holder for environment, explained that in April 2014, cabinet had welcomed East Thurrock United’s relocation proposals, and authorised the disposal of the Billet Field for this purpose – agreeing a price and other conditions.

He said: “Unfortunately, while the club has continued to plan the move, the details are not yet substantive enough for their formal planning applications to be submitted.”

Cllr Rice added: “While still welcoming the proposal overall, it is only right the council review the sale price agreed 18 months ago, and also introduces a deadline for the in-principle agreement for the disposal.

“This is intended to ensure that the club focuses on bringing the plans together as quickly as possible.”

Members agreed that the agreed price is set aside to be the subject of future negotiation, and that the council’s in principle agreement to the sale is extended only until the end of March 2016 – with the expectation that the club will be in a position to submit planning applications for its proposals by that time.

A spokesperson for East Thurrock United said: "The club will do its utmost to adhere to this deadline.
