Thurrock college band Such Strange Arts signed by American record label

A pop-punk band of students at South Essex College have been recognised by a record label.

Such Strange Arts, who entertained the crowd at the college’s Thurrock campus launch event last year supporting headline act Scouting for Girls, have been signed by USA based Standby Records.

The group, who are from Hullbridge and Rayleigh and are comprised of former and current students at the college, are now looking forward to the release of their new EP Waking The Neighbours in January, followed by a UK-wide tour in February.

The band’s guitarist, Matt Milton, is in the final year of his BA Music Production degree at the College’s Southend and Purfleet centres, while singer Jake Williamson, completed his BTEC Level 3 Music Performance last year.

Another former student, bassist Dean Bonning, completed his BTEC Level 3 Sports & Exercise Science course this year, while drummer Antony Yates completes the quartet.

The band was formed in 2011 and after a number of line-up changes, the current talent has been together for around two years and are ready to grab the opportunity with both hands.

Matt said: "The Music Production degree has made me a much more all-round musician.

"It’s not just about the performance, but also the theory and technical sides which has really helped when writing songs and producing studio recordings.

"Studying locally has been a great help in getting the band to where it is now, as otherwise we would not have been able to get together and rehearse as much as we have, so it has been a real bonus.

"The fact that we supported Scouting for Girls is something we will always remember and are so grateful for the opportunity. We can’t wait to start the band’s next chapter now."

The foursome describe themselves as a high energy pop-rock/pop-punk band with a wide range of influences from pop to metal which will appeal to a wide audience.

The EP is scheduled for release on January 29 and the tour kicks off in Manchester on February 17.

There will also be a release show and a release party, both taking place in Southend, announced in the coming weeks.
