Police cuts: MP Metcalfe pleased George Osborne "listened to him"

STEPHEN Metcalfe, local Member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has today expressed his delight that the Chancellor has heeded his call for the Police Budget to be protected.

The local MP had recently met with with the Prime Minister, David Cameron, to discuss his on going concerns about police funding and the impact that the proposed reduction would have had on Policing in Essex, especially in Basildon and Thurrock and who had also lobbied the Home Secretary on the issue said: “I’m delighted that the Chancellor and the Government have recognised the importance of properly funded police and listened to my call for proper funding of our hard working police personnel.”

“I asked for the cut to be abandoned and I am pleased it has been. I recognise that in Essex we are not out of the woods yet as we still have the second lowest Police precept in the country, but this decision is a very welcome step in the right direction.”

Stephen added: “I will now be discussing the situation with or local Police and Crime Commissioner to establish how this announcement will affect his plans.”

Stephen finished: “I hope this along with the other announcements in the Autumn Statement demonstrates that while tough decisions have to be taken, we are always willing to listen and when we can will act to address peoples concern.”
