IN November 2014, members of the youth project ‘Art Space’ in Thurrock decided they wanted to be involved in a project related to mental health. Mental health has affected so many young people in Thurrock including a few of the Art Space members and the young people were passionate about making a difference to others their age.

The agreed problem was stigmas and lack of education around the subject of mental health. Members decided they wanted to create a film to inform other young people that it is ok to experience difficulties with emotional well-being and talking about it should be encouraged.

The members teamed up with the Thurrock Youth Cabinet and Thurrock’s Member of Youth Parliament who had recently debated at the House of Commons for the UK national campaign. Mental Health came out on top.

The members of Art Space and the Thurrock Youth Cabinet are in the process of signing up Thurrock Schools in order for the mental health film to be shown in assemblies, tutor groups and PSHE lessons. Art Space’s next project is a music video, still with the theme of mental health.
