WHILE many of their friends were sleeping off the effects of Chrismas excesses on Boxing Day morning 15 Harriers were slogging their way round two local 5k cross-country courses.
Star of the day was Alec Finch who left County regular Grant Webb well behind to win the Crown to Crown event with a time of 16.49. This performance indicates that the 21 year old Loughborough student is in good shape to bid for a top ten place in the County Championships.
Best of the rest was Taylor Newell in 11th place in 18.36. He, too, will be trying to add to his County vest earned before Christmas, particularly in the ‘schools’ race.
Other Harriers finishers in this event – Jodi Meredith (u 17) 15th in 18.26. Harry Parker (u 13) 23rd in 20.08, Joe Logan (u 17) 25th in 20.18, Hayley Instance 32nd in 21.33; Mick Bumstead (v 60) 44th 22.07, Nigel Instance (v 45) 51st in 22.46, Lucie Ball (u 15) 23.04, Demi Eves (u 13) 84th in 25.15.
Harriers with memories that go back to the nineties will be interested to note Graeme Garner got round in 74th spot. A return to club running would be very welcome – preferably in Harriers colours, from this former County 5k champion.
The other event hosting half a dozen Harriers was the Basildon Park Run.
Keith Willett was 2nd here with a time of 20.15, 20 seconds behind the winner. Toby Draper – a recent winner of the Thurrock event was 4th with 20.48. Jamie Mack 5th, Martin Mack was 8th 21.17. Henri Willett was 11th (23.03). Under 11 Enzo Draper was an eye-opening 43rd in the 94 finishers.
This weekend the 4th match in the 5 match Essex League Series takes place at Orion Harriers Headquarters using the usual timetable.
