A BRAND new South Ockendon housing development – designed for older tenants – will be available for eligible applicants from the end of January.
Thurrock Council is holding an open day on Thursday, 14 January between 10am and 3pm for prospective tenants.
gt;Seventy-five per cent of the homes will be available to local council tenants – as well as on the waiting list and living nearby – who are aged 60 or over, or 55-plus with a disability.
The other 25 per cent will initially be available for those qualifying and living outside the area.
Three-quarters of the HAPPI (Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation) homes are initially available to eligible people living within around 1.2km of the site.
Portfolio holder for Adult Social Care, Cllr Barbara Rice said she’s pleased to see the finished project which is a result of joint working between housing and social care teams.
She said: “Think of these homes as future proof – you might not need a wet room or separate bedrooms right now, but you may in five or ten years’ time.
“The properties are specifically designed for older people as well as people with disabilities.
“Save yourself the hassle of moving as you grow older and come along and see what Derry Avenue can do for you now and in the future.”
Portfolio holder for housing, Cllr Lynn Worrall added: “This is a truly great opportunity for Thurrock people to benefit from well-built, new, functional homes at a time when that is becoming increasingly difficult.
“Please come along to the open day next Thursday to find out more if you or a family member is considering moving.
“Even if you’re not currently a housing tenant or on the waiting list – the housing team will be on hand during the open day to assess whether you are eligible.
“We are looking forward to seeing you and your families next Thursday.”
